Baby langur learning to jump

Nhat, a baby red-shanked douc langur, learns how to jump. The first try is not successful, but he is doing better.
As a young baby, Nhat was bitten in the eyes by his father. The bite caused a serious inner wound, which meant that he couldn’t suck milk from his mother, so at two weeks old, the keepers had to take him away from her. After half a year, Nhat’s eyes are recovering very well.
Despite having a long to very long tail, langurs do not use their tail to manipulate or hold objects. The tail is not prehensile. Instead, it is dedicated wholly to help them balance when moving on branches or jumping amongst the forest canopy. When langurs jump from above to lower in the trees, they are able to jump up to 12 m. Some langurs also use the tail to communicate. They will swing the tail from side to side, or twirl it in a circular motion to signal a threat or dominance.

Poznajcie półrocznego duka wspaniałego. Nhat urodził się w ośrodku dla zagrożonych gatunków małp naczelnych w Wietnamie. Niestety z jakiegoś powodu ojciec go atakował. Kiedy Nhat miał 2 tygodnie, ojciec po raz kolejny ugryzł go w oko, przebijając się zębem aż do podniebienia. Maluch nie był w stanie normalne jedzenie. Żeby uratować mu życie, trzeba było go zabrać od mamy. Codziennie o 7 wieczorem chodziłam karmić Nhata. Po ugryzieniu został ledwo widoczny ślad, a maluch z każdym dniem był coraz silniejszy i szczęśliwszy.
