"Prairiedise": Lincoln's pedestrian mall, 1959

This home movie footage, shot by Lincoln Nebraska resident Guy Feistner, shows the temporary pedestrian mall built along O Street in downtown Lincoln (between 11th and 13th Streets) during the city's centennial celebration in May, 1959. Traffic was diverted along the busy throughway, sod and trees and benches were brought in, and the temporary feature lasted for the whole of May 1959. The mall was named "Prairiedise," after a city-wide name-the-mall contest. While it is now long-gone, Prairiedise inspired the building of the pedestrian mall along 15th Street during the State's centennial in 1967.
