Racial identity development is important for psychotherapists, psychologists, and other mental health proessionals to discuss. Sadly, many do not.
Do you ever wonder how you came to view the world as you have?
Do you know exactly which family member, social factor, or cultural factor may have influenced your view.
Racial identity development can be difficult to study and understand. But as you go throughout your life you will be able to see just how much racial identity painted your world.
It took me a few years before I could figure out what my worldview was. I've always been rather vocal and independent. But racial identity development may take more time to develop because of the pressure to confirm or integrate and/or the pressure to segregate in some cultures.
In this video, I acknowledge our recent events by discussing the racial identity model of John and Joy Hoffman. I will post some more resources for you to continue your learning below.
Discussed in the video:
-Definition of racial development
-Multicultural experiences we have during development that shapes us
-Review of racial identity model
-Personalization of racial model
-Example of racial development for People of Color and European/Caucasian cultures
