Everything that glitters isn't gold ⚱️

A natural clay matka cools water through evaporative cooling, where tiny pores in the earthen pot allow moisture to reach the outer surface and evaporate, carrying heat away from the water inside. A raw, unpolished, porous earthen matka usually performs better than a shiny, polished, sealed, or decorative matka because better breathability means better cooling. The best matka for cold water should feel slightly moist from the outside in dry weather with good air circulation, while a completely dry surface may mean the pot is working more like a normal water container than a traditional cooling matka.

Matka cooling depends on clay quality, porosity, humidity, airflow, placement, and hygiene. Keeping an earthen pot in open air, away from hot appliances, raised on a small stand, and lightly covered with a clean wet cotton cloth can improve cooling by increasing evaporation from the surface. The cloth should be washed and dried daily to avoid fungal growth, bad hygiene, and contamination risks. A tap matka is a practical upgrade because it keeps the lid closed, reduces hand contact, and helps keep drinking water cleaner while preserving the natural cooling benefits of traditional clay pots.
