Web Simulations in Behavioral Science: Optical Illusions & Gemini AI

Explore the intersection of web development and behavioral science through interactive optical illusion simulations. We examine how testing order biases human perception and test if Gemini AI can seamlessly analyze video frames.

Welcome to another technical session where we build and analyze science-based web applications. In this video, we review a custom optical illusion simulation running on bionichaos.com. At first glance, the objects appear to be moving in a circular motion, but we utilize visual helpers to prove that the circles are actually moving in a perfectly straight line. The circular effect is entirely dictated by the precise mathematical timing of each object reaching the edge of the screen.

Beyond the code, we look closely at the behavioral study aspects of this web simulation. Human perception is heavily influenced by the order of testing. We discuss the top-down versus bottom-up problem: if a user starts with multiple circles and reduces the count, their threshold for perceiving circular versus linear motion changes dramatically compared to starting with a single circle and increasing the count. Understanding these cognitive biases is critical when designing accurate questionnaires, interactive data visualizations, and biomedical data science studies.

Finally, we push the boundaries of current artificial intelligence by testing Gemini AI's ability to watch and analyze YouTube videos. Because Gemini can process actual video frames rather than just relying on text captions, we experiment with its capability to automatically select and extract highly relevant one-minute clips from longer technical content.
