How to use Beat Slicer Mode the EASY WAY!

Beat Slicer Mode allows you to chop a section of your track into 8 slices on the fly, which are then controlled using the 8 pads available on your controller.

So you can think of those 8 pads as 8 separate parts from a section in a song, and you pressing those pads, enable you to remix that section specifically!

► SCRIPT

Accessing beat slicer mode differs for every controller. Some natively have the feature and some don’t. In our case, we’re going to use a DDJ-SB3 to access this mode, and if you also own a DDJ-SB3, you can access beat slicer mode by simply holding shift then pressing the pad scratch button.

So to easily get you started, let’s load up a simple edm song, and make an 8 bar loop in it’s intro. And what we’re going to do here is try to remix this loop as it is. Now, the trick to making it sound good, is by focusing on the 5th and 6th button, and you can think of these pads as a kick drum and a snare.

So with that said, we’re going to drum our pattern in while the beat slicer mode is active. But we’re going to do it in time and in rhythm as the song plays.

Now as you noticed there, I didn’t go in asap. I waited for the drum patter to go on for 4 beats, then I implemented my technique, and that’s the key to making beat slicer mode fun to use.
Now let’s add more flare to it, by activating slip mode as well and combining that with our vinyl break effect.

To activate slip mode on the ddi sb3, simply press and hold shift then press the vinyl button.

So you definitely need rhythm when implementing beat slicer mode. Think of this mode as an opportunity for you to redrum and remix your beat on the fly.

Now, that we got the basics out of the way, let’s implement what we learned with an EDM chorus.

Keep in mind that we’re no long dealing with a simple drum beat, so now we have more sounds to play around with. But even if we do have that, it’s best to keep simple and implement the patterns we practiced. So Remember to stay in rhythm and in beat!
