In this video, I'm talking about tips to help 1 month old babies sleep longer at night and during the day.

Awake times and catnapping

For these little guys and gals, the awake time is 1-2 hours throughout the day. Catnapping at this age is really common and it can be normal. Nap lengths can vary so I wouldn't worry about it.

Night Sleep

The amount of hours that you can reasonably expect your baby to be in bed, to be in the dark – for us to be having ‘night sleep’ – is anywhere from 8-10 hours.
Total sleep in 24 hours:

In a 24-hour period, your 1.5-3 month old is probably going to get anywhere from 15-17 hours total sleep. There's no need to start tracking your baby's sleep yet, unless you think he's not been sleeping enough for a while - at least a week.

Tips for Naps - Naps On The Go and Motion Naps:

You don’t have to worry about all these naps being at home, either. You can certainly utilize naps on the go if you want to get out and about. Your baby’s going to have to sleep on the go, whether in the baby carrier, in the stroller, sometimes in the car. That’s fine! Motion naps in the swing or vibrating chair are fine too, so long as you supervise your baby in these spaces.
Limit naps to 2 hours and stick to awake times

Don't let any 1 nap be longer than 2 hours. Try to make sure they stay awake for at least 30 minutes, but hopefully for another hour or two.
Day Vs. Night Confusion

The second thing I want to go over is day vs. night confusion. A lot of this is just physiological and will develop when it’s time. But there are certainly things we can do now to help reinforce daytime vs. night-time for your baby.
Daytime:

If it’s daytime, have the curtains open, the lights on. Have some music playing or the TV on. Engage as you normally would during the day.

Daytime sleep:

For naps, you don’t have to put him in a completely blacked-out room on his own. You don’t have to tiptoe round the house! Newborns can often sleep anywhere and everywhere.

Night Sleep:

When it comes to night-time, we want the opposite: Dark, boring, silent. Reinforce the idea that during the night, we do nothing except sleep.

I recommend you have a really dark bedroom with only white noise playing. Any time that you need to wake up to feed your baby or change your baby, really try to work with as little light as possible.
Swaddle your baby:

I do recommend swaddling 1-2 month old babies. It helps them sleep so much better, for longer stretches. It mutes the startle reflex from waking up your baby.
Night Wakings:

I would change my baby first during a night waking. Then I would re-swaddle him. I would get him ready for a feed and turn the light off. Then you want to feed your baby in the pitch black.
The Ideal Bedtime

Make sure your little one has the right bedtime. Keep track of your baby’s bedtime and night wakings for about a week.

You might see that you’re putting him down at 7pm and he’s only meant to be having 8-10 hours of night-time sleep. That could explain why he’s up at 4am wanting to play! Instead, make your baby’s bedtime be a little bit later for now. It might even have to be 10pm if you don't want to be up before 6am.
Early Evening Naps:

What you need to do instead, is to add in an early evening nap. If it’s getting to 5: 30 or 6 o’clock and your baby seems really tired, get him down for a nap at that time.
