The midnight color is slowly being scratched away around the ports, especially around the USB-C ports. But the color around the rest of the body has maintained the color just fine, things you wear on your wrists like bracelets, or watches can scratch up the bottom edge of the laptop. And scratches will be much more noticeable with the dark midnight color. Also, the midnight color grabs a lot of fingerprints and when it gets dirty.

After 45 battery cycles the battery is still at 100%. On average, I’m seeing way less battery cycles across my Apple silicon macbooks compared to the old Intel ones. Because this laptop is so light, we’re quick to use it wherever we are. The rubber feet beneath the M2 MacBook air have been useless at preventing it from sliding around smooth surfaces, and combined with the light weight makes this thing slipperiest macbook I’ve used. Usually, I prefer using usb-c cables to charge macbooks instead of magsafe, because it’s just so much more convenient and can be used with basically any other device you need to charge that has USB-c like a mouse, keyboard, phone, or nintendo switch, but because this M2 MacBook air is so light, and prone to being yanked by a robot vacuum owned by another big tech company, I’d say the M2 Macbook air is a laptop you probably should use the Magsafe cable with to charge the laptop because it makes it less likely your laptop will be yanked to the floor and, it frees up the remaining 2 usb-c ports for other devices.

In terms of getting things done the last 6 months, this laptop has done really well. The purpose of it is to edit YouTube video scripts, worksheets, and provide supplemental editing for the YouTube channel and when it comes to that. Rarely do I see it send a spinning beach ball of doom or struggle to do those things. Back in 2020, I used to use an M1 MacBook air as the main editing machine for this youtube channel. And I can say this M2 macbook air is just as good in that same role. While I now have much more powerful machines to do the bulk of the editing, I don’t think anyone should sleep on how well this laptop can handle editing multiple streams of 4K 10bit video editing in FCP, general web browsing and productivity tasks.

I think a lot of people looking at this laptop will also be looking at the M1 MacBook air. And in my earlier video about this, I said, the M1 Air was a much better value machine, while the M2 air provided a bit more premium feeling experience. I still think that is mostly true. In terms of sheer value I think the M1 MacBook air, to this day, is the best in Apple’s lineup, it is such a good value, especially since it’s constantly on sale, but, after using the M2 MacBook air for a longer period of time, I can see why someone would much prefer the M2 air. The design is newer and in line with Apple’s other products, it’s faster, and most importantly the magsafe port. The magsafe port gives you peace of mind that your laptop won’t be flung across the room when the charging cable gets snagged. So, looking at it now, while the M1 Air is still the best value, I think the M2 provides some compelling reasons and nice quality of life improvements that justify the price increase. Either way, you can’t really go wrong with either option, it really depends on your priorities.

Who is the M2 MacBook air for? If you’re a hobbyist or just a starting out video editor, content creator, or photographer, this is more than enough power to do what you need. The magsafe charging port leaves 2 open ports for you to use other essential peripherals or even dongles if you need to. The M2 MacBook air has held up really well, but the Midnight color would not be my suggestion if you care about how it looks long term, as scratches and fingerprints are much more noticeable than the lighter colors. The brighter and bigger display, addition of a magsafe port, faster performance and updated design make a compelling upgrade over the M1 air that’s usually a better value.
