Nancy is continuing the Great Basics quilt with this tutorial to work on the borders. Catch the other episodes Nancy did for this series on the OnPoint-TV YouTube channel.
The quilt has cornerstones and side borders. The top is complete with the nine patch blocks, setting squares, setting triangles and corner triangles. The stripes on the setting triangles and corner triangles bump up the uniqueness of the quilt.
Nancy spray sizes the quilt with Mary Ellen's Best Press and presses it flat and as square as possible. Then she goes to the next step of adding the borders.
You'll need to trim some of the edges. Nancy recommends using a smaller ruler so you don't try to trim too much at one time. Measure a quarter of an inch up from the point on each nine patch block and trim; working two points at a time. At the corner, use your square ruler and trim the top. Place your smaller ruler next to the square ruler and trim. Watch how Nancy does it in the video. Trim just to the corner. Spin your quilt around and continue trimming.
Nancy did not square up the quilt. She just trimmed a quarter of an inch from the edges of the points of the nine patch blocks. Before adding borders, she'll measure the quilt three times. Measure about 8 inches up from the bottom, then the center, and 8 inches down from the top. Turn the quilt and measure three more times. She shares the math if your quilt doesn't measure equally each time.
This quilt has cornerstones so Nancy doesn't have to put one border on at a time. It makes it a little easier.
For the crib size quilt, Nancy will cut the width of the fabric. Cutting the width of the fabric for the small quilt makes better use of the fabric and is more cost efficient. For a larger quilt, you will want to cut length of grain. You can actually tear the fabric to keep it perfectly straight.
Take the fabric that is going to be used for the border. If you have it folded like Nancy showed in the first episode of the Great Basics series, unroll it and fold it in half. She'll cut four strips. Nancy shows how to cut the borders using the power cutting technique. Have a new sharp blade in your rotary cutter to get through the layers of fabric.
Line up the strips. Use a 6 and half inch by 24 inch long ruler, line it up on the fold of the strips and cut half of the width of your quilt. When you open the strips, they should fit each side of the quilt.
Next are the cornerstones. Cut out the strips like the borders. Then cut out the squares for the cornerstones. Add the cornerstones to two of borders; the top and bottom borders. The seam of the cornerstones are pressed toward the border.
Pin the borders without the cornerstones to the quilt first and then sew. Use a lot of pins so the fabric stays in place. Use spray sizing and press the seams toward the borders.
Now add the top and bottom borders with the cornerstones. Matching up the seams and butting them together. Use lots of pins again and then sew to the quilt top.
Join Nancy next time as she does the backing, the batting and the basting of the quilt.
