How to use sphagnum moss with orchids

When used with orchids, sphagnum moss can be a life savior, or the doom of an orchid. But this has only to do with using it in the wrong manner, for the wrong orchid and in the wrong environment. Sphagnum moss has the unique quality of retaining a lot of water, while still being airy for epiphyte orchid.
