"He's friendly" is a D**K move.
If we just tell people not to have their dogs off lead, yet insist dogs be increasingly involved with society, it seems like the answer.
Banning behavior always seems like the answer. But the layer underneath is called harm reduction, and it is often looked over.
Instead of telling teenagers to just not have sex, we educate them, and if they do find themselves with a baby on the way, or a decision they need to make, we offer them support.
People are going to have their dogs off lead. Honestly, it pains me to think of a world where every dog must be on lead all times of its life when outside, because we’ve created that. With our need to have and do things beyond our capacity.
People have too many dogs, dogs they don’t need, don’t train, etc. It used to be a sense of pride to have a dog you could walk off lead that was friendly and minded the rules.
Today, because of entitlement, immaturity, lack of awareness, and many other human ego-based and western culture variables, people think it’s for the average person when it is NOT.
There are tons of options for dogs not ready for off leash in an appropriate area. Sniff spots, empty baseball diamonds and soccer fields, etc.
If you live in a busy city, your dog cannot be off leash at all bc of the density of the population and business of the environment. Find a park, find a plant store for sniffing (not marking lol), be creative and do your best. Use a flexi when you can for more freedom for your dog.
If you lack financial resources, you’ve come to the right place bc I will make ANYWHERE that looks ok and won’t get the cops called on me, a place for Enzo to sniff around off leash.
Checklist for that:
1) Have I checked this place out before just bringing my dog here?
✅ Continue ❌ Not prepared
2) Am I gradually entering into this space or just barging in?
✅ Continue ❌ Rushing
3) Is my dog “with me” or totally uninterested?
✅ Continue ❌ Slow down
4) Have we practiced our skills thoroughly in a setting my dog cannot succeed and seeing that success before I just expect it to work here?
✅ Continue ❌ Do that first
