Why Cutty Sark's Figurehead Needed To Be Replaced

Cutty Sark’s original figurehead, created by the legendary ship’s carver Frederick Hellyer, was damaged in a storm in the late 19th century.

The figurehead that visitors have become used to is actually a replica, made in 1957.

In 2019 the shipkeeping team discovered signs of rot. Some conservation work was carried out, but the decision was eventually taken to replace it with a new carving.

The new figurehead is based on drawings by Hercules Linton, the original designer of Cutty Sark. The figurehead aims to reflect the beauty of the original ship designs and celebrate the art of ship’s carving.
