8 Ways to Save (AND MAKE) Money With Sheep

Hello! We're the High Mountain Homestead. We're all about better soil, better plants, and better animals. Today let's talk about how our better animals can save and earn us some cash in the pocket.

In this video we've outlined 8 different ways that sheep can save/earn money if you keep them on your homestead.

1) Chicken Food: What? Yes! When we get our rams butchered we save the offal and skulls. We are slowly warming up to eating the offal ourselves because the health benefits are unbelievable. If you can't quite enjoy the taste of offal yet (like us), cook it up and feed it to your chickens. They will turn these amazingly healthy meats into amazing quality eggs for you and your family or anyone you share your eggs with. As for the skulls, we put these out in winter (to avoid feeding the bugs) and the chickens peck away at the bits of flesh to get some good quality protein in their diet while there are little to no bugs around to provide protein to the chickens. Again, this just turns into better quality eggs.

2) Sell Your Lamb Meat: There is definitely a market for this and if you have a small homestead like we do then you only end up having the responsibility of selling a few lambs. Not bad.

3) Eat Your Own Lamb Meat: If you have a few of your own lambs in the freezer it can drastically cut down on your costs to buy meat for your own family. A few lambs will yield more than 100 pounds of meat and save you potentially a thousand dollars throughout the year.

4) Fertilize Your Pasture: Sheep manure has more nitrogen than cow or horse manure. This stuff is so good for the pasture! You save money by not having to buy Nitrogen to spread on the pasture.

5) Trade Lamb Meat: If you're interested in having elk, deer, fish, pigs, etc in the freezer but don't have the time/expertise to hunt or fish or raise pigs then you can trade your lamb with friends. Buying any of these meats costs a lot of money but a lamb can be a powerful bargaining tool and give you variety in the freezer.

6) Sell Sheep at Shows: Each year you'll end up with more sheep on your homestead than you started with. You can sell any potential breeding stock at shows and make a nice profit.

7) Sell Sheep Locally: Even if you don't attend shows, you can still list your breeding stock online at a number of places.

8) Bones: Make your own bone broth! This saves a ton of money and is packed with nutrition for you and your family. We make huge batches and use the broth in tons of recipes. We also drink this straight if any of us are feeling under the weather and it definitely makes a difference.

Long live sheep!
