Deep: Freediving and Renegade Science | James Nestor | Talks at Google
Journalist, author and freediver James Nestor visits Google Mountain View to discuss his newest book.

Nestor's book and presentation focuses on how freediving is more than just a competitive sport or a hunting technique – it has become a vital tool in marine mammal research. The final chapter of DEEP takes place on the Schmidt Ocean Institute's R/V Falkor (Google CEO Eric and Wendy Schmidt are founders of the institute) with a team of scientists who are searching for life in the planet's deepest waters. Nestor, along with a documentary film crew, is currently working with big data specialists to see if they can crack the sperm whale click communication code (which researchers believe is a digital -- not tonal – language.
