She was angry.
She was bitter.
She wanted vengeance.
She told me she would not settle this case.
Ever.
She want to go to trial.
She wanted the jury to tell the world.
She wanted a verdict.
She knew the verdict would be in her favor.
She had justice on her side.
She knew in her heart she would prevail.
No amount of money would change her circumstances.
As the litigation proceeded and we got closer to trial, the defense made a substantial settlement offer.
She saw it as a sign of weakness.
She saw it as a sign of capitulation.
I saw it as a smart move on the defense's part.
I saw it as an excellent settlement offer.
I recommended it to her.
She refused.
She was angry.
She wanted a trial.
She wanted the jury to return a verdict.
She wanted to tell the world about what happened.
I told her “Fine.”
“Let's get you prepared for trial then.”
During the course of trial preparation, this angry woman came to her senses.
This angry woman realized something she had not understood before.
This injured victim finally recognized what it would mean if she were to go to trial and be subjected to a vicious cross examination.
She would be made to look like a liar.
Big-time.
There were inconsistencies in her story that she could not explain.
Not just one inconsistency, but many.
That was too much for her.
She began to realize that may be going to trial wasn't the best option for her.
