Australia the ‘most successful country in the world’: Alexander Downer

Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has celebrated Australia for being one of "the most successful countries" in the world, as conversations continue to be had about the need to celebrate Australia Day.

Mr Downer’s comments come as a Captain Cook statue in Melbourne has been vandalised on the eve of the country’s national day.

“Australia would have to be one of the most- if not the most, successful countries in the world,” he told Sky News host Steve Price.

“You would think that for one day of the year, we might just celebrate that.

“Instead - a tiny minority of people are ashamed of our history… I think it’s contemptible.”
