Chernobyl Liquidators 🇺🇦 | The 90-Second Mission That Saved Millions

After the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, approximately 3,500 liquidators were sent onto the roofs of the reactor buildings to perform one of the most dangerous clean-up operations in history. ⚠️

Their mission was to manually remove highly radioactive graphite debris from the destroyed reactor core so engineers could construct the concrete sarcophagus to contain the radiation.

Because robots failed under extreme radiation, humans had to take their place. Each liquidator was allowed only 40–90 seconds on the roof before being replaced. Many were exposed to lethal doses of radiation.

Their sacrifice helped prevent an even greater catastrophe, limiting the spread of radioactive contamination across Europe and beyond. 🕊️
