CFPUA's wastewater treatment division processes and discharges millions of gallons of wastewater through two wastewater treatment plants:
James A. Loughlin (Northside) Wastewater Treatment Plant (NSWWTP)
M’Kean Maffitt (Southside) Wastewater Treatment Plant (SSWWTP)
WASTEWATER PURIFICATION
Wastewater is purified using various physical, chemical and biological processes designed to extract, convert or remove organic pollutants, solids and pathogenic (disease causing) organisms from the incoming wastewater. Wastewater is treated and discharged based on stringent guidelines from the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Remaining solids produced within the plant’s processes are stabilized according to North Carolina Class B land application standards and are returned to the environment as a soil amendment applied to nearby agricultural lands.

PLANT TOURS AVAILABLE
We welcome school groups and organizations to tour either of our two wastewater treatment facilities. Learn more about how wastewater is cleaned and discharged back to nature. Tours are age appropriate and offer an exciting behind-the-scenes look at the treatment process. Tours must be requested and scheduled in advance.
