15 Times When the Glass Was Not Strong Enough

Glass has a wide range of applications such as in your car’s windscreen, protective covering in animal enclosures, and office building or store entrance doors, amongst other uses. Sometimes, those glass shields fail to do the job, and some mind-blowing things happen as a result. At other times, in animal enclosures where there are usually a lot of glass cages, visitors have to see the animals, and the animals have to be safely tucked away behind the glass, so nobody interferes with them. If you have been to an animal enclosure before, you must have noticed signs that say “Do Not Touch.” Many people adhere to these instructions without knowing why. What happens when you touch the glass?

There are other incidents outside zoos and animal parks in which the glass that was supposed to be a protective shield or covering failed from people running into glass, and the glass shattered to animals breaking through glass. Number 15 Shark Tank Explosion in Shangai China

This happened at a mall in Shanghai, China, where a shark tank in an aquarium exploded. It happened suddenly and terrified the shoppers and the children close to the area. The explosion sent pieces of glass flying all over the place, injuring 16 people, and 33 tons of water gushed out of the broken tank. Those were hardly the concern as the unfortunate event occurred, unlike the eleven sharks and other aquatic creatures that escaped from the tank. Imagine visiting the mall with your family and thinking you are safe as you shop. Then, suddenly you see water gushing out and sharks swimming around you. Must be shocking, right? It seemed exactly that way when the tank exploded with shoppers around. When asked, the authorities explained the incident as having something to do with the hot weather at the time, which was unusual and unprecedented. Apparently, glass begins to melt at 700 to 900 degrees Fahrenheit and the glass used for the panel seemed to have gotten to that point that it could not hold the pressure of the water anymore. The explanation did not sound convincing anyway. So, it’s safe to assume that something fishy was going on.

Number 14 Gorilla Smashes Zoo Glass

This happened at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, and it remains one of the scariest incidents involving an animal smashing glass. Even scarier is the fact that there were children on the other side of the glass when the incident happened. The kids were observing the gorilla when it suddenly went into a fit for no reason. Nobody understood what was happening until it went charging at the glass wall where the group of kids was observing. The gorilla gave the glass one strong punch until it cracked, but fortunately, the glass wall was made from multiple layers of glass, so the punch did no significant damage. The builders must have envisaged events like this and have put in measures that the gorilla or any other animal would have been unable to overcome. CCTV caught some of the actions of the gorilla on video and also showed the frustrated gorilla walking away after being unable to break down the glass. Thinking about what would have happened if the angry ape had successfully torn down the glass is unimaginable. That was undoubtedly a tragedy averted. It may seem as though the glass stopped the gorilla, but a little bit of persistence from the giant ape could have done further damage. It also shows that glass may indeed not be strong enough in the long run, and something stronger may be required.
