2020 Triumph Street Triple 765 RS First Ride Review | Ultimate Motorcycling

The 2020 Triumph Street Triple 765 RS returns with a handful of updates designed to satisfy sport riders and legislators alike.

Spurred by Euro 5 requirements and equipped with a boatload of data acquired from the 765cc engine's time in the Moto 2 championship, Triumph has made several keen tweaks that have resulted in a claimed +9-percent increase in horsepower and torque between 6-10k rpm. In other words, you're getting more mid-range power exactly where the average rider needs it. The best news is that the 2020 765 RS achieves greater mid-range power without sacrificing anything on the top-end, so we're still seeing a claimed 121 hp and 58 ft/lbs of torque.

Internal changes to the 765cc inline-triple engine come in the form of an updated exhaust cam and a revised air intake. Coupled with that, an entirely new, freer-flowing exhaust system has been installed that accommodates the revised state of tune.

Due to their participation in the Moto 2 championship, Triumph engineers were able to pick up several other tricks to increase the efficiency and reduced rotating mass by a claimed 7-percent. By adopting stricter machining techniques, Triumph has tightened up the gearbox tolerances and done away with anti-backlash gearing, effectively reduced the rotating mass of all internal components. Triumph claims that these advancements help 'free up' the motor and improve throttle response.

Overall, the mid-range improvements and gearbox changes have made one of the best inline-triple engines on the market that much better. The 765cc motor pulls from the lowest rpm band, and now, with the extra mid-range puff, riders will be able to have all the fun they want in the canyons without constantly revving it out to the redline. Better yet, when on track, the wonderfully smooth 765cc motor doesn't run out of steam and fits into that sweet-spot for power, when it comes to performance machines.

The chassis on the 2020 Triumph Street Triple 765 RS has not been updated this year. We still have the power-couple that is the fully-adjustable Showa fork and fully-adjustable Ohlins shock, along with sporty geometry that make this both an extremely nimble, but balanced motorcycle.

Braking comes in the form of powerful Brembo M50 calipers, with a ratio-adjustable Brembo MCS lever.

The Striple is equipped with a full sweet of electronics, as well as four pre-set riding modes. Although it lacks IMU supported ABS, TC and wheelie-control; Triumph engineers have done a superb job getting the most out of their more simplified package. ABS cannot be turned off due to Euro 5 compliance and in track settings, it can trigger prematurely, if you're too aggressive. In fact, ABS intervention on track is the singular complaint about the 2020 Striple and it is a direct result of adhearing to Euro 5 regulations.

Other changes for 2020 are focused on styling, as well as honing Triumph's stellar fit and finish. Designers went the extra mile and ensured that customers will be getting a bike that will look spectacular from every angle.

Senior Editor Nic de Sena headed off to Cartagena, Spain to take the 2020 Streeet Triple 765 RS for a spin on the streets and on the track.
