Belarus: Police and protesters face off at anti-Lukashenko demo in Minsk

Hundreds of protesters took part in an anti-Lukashenko demonstration in Minsk's Independence Square on Friday, as police continued arresting several protesters.

Footage filmed on Friday shows hundreds of protesters marching over the capital's streets to Independence Square where police guards surrounded them.

Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the August 9 disputed presidential election that saw incumbent president Aleksander Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term.

On August 19 the European Union announced sanctions against "a substantial number of individuals responsible for violence, repression, and election fraud" in Belarus.
