A* A Level Photography Sketchbook Tour! (full marks)

Hello and welcome to my tour of my A Level Photography sketchbooks!

I was given full marks for my AS and A2 work. Please note I haven't included every single page from my sketchbooks in this video. I have an FAQ below if you have any questions!

"Cinematography" final piece mentioned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtKzWYxqg9k

*** FAQ ***
What year did you do your A2 and AS levels?
2013 - 2015

What exam board were you with?
I think it was AQA.

What sketchbook did you use?
The school provided us with A3 sized cartridge paper sketchbooks by Seawhite. I think the paper weight was around 140gsm.

What camera did you use?
I used my own camera, a DSLR Canon 700d. The school also provided us with Nikon DSLR cameras if we needed them.

What did you use to edit your photographs?
I used Photoshop which was loaded onto the school computers. I usually only edited the brightness or saturation as I preferred to take a more art-y approach to my projects and experimented more with mixed media.

What do you do in Photography A Level? Why do you have sketchbooks?
Photography was structured very similarly to Graphics. We had two projects a year and had to show all of our research and progress in a sketchbook - every detail, even a small edit to a photo, had to be recorded in these to get the marks! The general format was to research a photographer and do a photoshoot in the style of this photographer again and again to be able to combine styles and techniques and eventually create a final piece. We also had to write an evaluation for each project and, in the third self-titled project, a short essay about why we had chosen this subject matter.

Did you chose your own projects? How did you decide?
The first project "Abandonment" was chosen by our teachers. The second project "Storytelling" was from the exam board, who gave us a list of titles to choose from. The third project "Cinematography" was self-titled and the fourth and final project "Unusual Portraiture" was again from the exam board. For the exam board projects, I usually did some research into photographers styles that I liked and then tried to see which title best fit into these styles. For the self-titled project, I was very interested in moving image and the use of colour in film so, with the help of my teachers, I chose the broader title of Cinematography.

Any advice for writing annotations?
Think about every tiny detail and decision you made! Think about what specific details you liked about the photographers work, why you chose the locations for your photoshoots, why you edited the photo, whether you think the photos will work well with your project. Remember to write about things you dislike as well as things you like and what you think you can do to improve!

What is the background music in this video?
CGI Snake by Chris Zabriskie.

Thank you for watching :~)
