The Reversed Lens - back to basics macro photography
*** Correction ***
At about 4 minutes into this video, while demonstrating the positioning of the 50mm lens, I made reference to the "...flange/focal distance of the lens...". This should have been ..."flange /focal distance of the camera..."
Many thanks to Ian for pointing out my mistake!
On with the show....
Here is a list of the gear used in this video. Some of these links may be affiliate links (Amazon and Adorama) - meaning that I may receive a small commission on qualified sales. Doesn't cost you a penny more, but helps me out a bit.
The lenses... Nikon's incredible 50mm f/1.8D - superb! https://amzn.to/3qxpCEz
The surprisingly useful and very affordable 18-55mm kit lens... https://amzn.to/30wViiU
The telephoto zoom that I used is no longer available, but performance-wise the newer Nikkor 55-300mm VR zoom is even better... https://amzn.to/38uZVyi
To reverse lenses directly onto a camera , extension tubes or bellows, you will need a reversing ring and this is the one I use most of the time... https://amzn.to/3l1N5wN
This reversing ring will also work with other lenses, with different filter threads, but only if you have a selection of step rings (I use these in almost every setup and keep two full sets on hand for every new projects)... https://amzn.to/3bxRRPb
Many thanks to my Patreon supporters and Allan Walls Photography donors! Couldn't do this without you!

This is another video in my series of back to basics discussions. In this one we take an in-depth look at the reversed lens technique for extreme macro photography. The first bit is mostly theoretical stuff about how this smashing concept works. Then I show you how to measure magnification, set up and use various reversed lens configurations, show you what I got in the mail, and provide a little unsolicited (but well-meaning) advice about using this nifty technique.
The photographer that I was praising is called Thomas Shahan, and you really must check out his work at www.thomasshahan.com
The final image was not photographed with a reversed lens. It was shot with a Mitutoyo Plan Apo 5X microscope objective (160 stacked images).
