Japan's Emperor Naruhito and his wife Empress Masako took part in a royal motorcade in Tokyo on Sunday, as thousands of cheering people lined the capital's streets to celebrate the emperor's enthronement earlier this year.

The parade started at the Imperial Palace with the Emperor and Empress making their 4,6-kilometre long (2,6-mile) way in an open-top limousine to the couple's residence in the Akasaka Estate. The royal motorcade was originally planned for October 22 but was postponed in the wake of deadly Typhoon Hagibis last month.

Naruhito acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1, after his father Emperor Akihito abdicated on 30 April.
