The "jazz minor" sound you've been looking for!
The melodic minor sound in jazz is so distinct - it even got the name "jazz minor"!
This is one of the concepts that completely transformed my understanding of jazz harmony and melody.
It made me realize that the melodic minor scale is equally as important as the major scale in order to nail that jazz sound.
If you're just starting out with the melodic minor sound, then you'll find that it takes some time to really get "that" sound.
One way to start exploring is to practice outlining the diatonic 7th chords.
It really creates such a distinct sound - immediately recognizable if you've listened to a lot of jazz.
It doesn't end there, though.
The melodic minor scale in jazz is quite a big study, because many other common jazz sounds are derived from the modes of the melodic minor.
As I mentioned, it's just as important as the major scale, so it's a great idea to start learning it sooner than later.
And if you're wanting my direct guidance and methods on how to effectively tap into the melodic minor sound and all of it's applications throughout the jazz language, email me at charlie@novujazzacademy.com with some info about your piano background and goals, and we'll chat.
