Eurovision: Top 20 Most Successful Years for the Big 5 (2000-2019)
Hi everyone! Today's video is a ranking of the past 20 years based on how well the big 5 countries have placed in the contest.
Since 2000, the EBU allowed France, Germany, Spain, and the UK (+ later Italy in 2011) to automatically qualify to the final of the contest, without the need to worry about being relegated due to a low score (2000-2003) or to qualify through a semi final (2004-present).
In some years, we have seen some great, original entries from the big 5- it would be common sense to send something risky to the contest when you're guaranteed a place in the final! But in other years, it's clear sometimes that some big 5 countries put in the bare minimum effort and place lower.
What you can see on screen for each year is a ranking of the big 5 (or 4) countries that year, how well they placed, the video of the highest placing big 5 song that year, and their average placing overall, which is what the ranking is based on...
HOW I CALCULATED THE AVERAGE
In order to make everything fair, the placings in the years that had a final which didn't have 26 countries have been scaled up or down to 26. For example, coming 27th in a year with 27 countries in a final means the number is scaled to 26.00 for the purpose of calculating the average.
For countries that tied (before the tiebreak rule was extended to all places in 2008), I have added a .5 at the end of their placing for the purpose of the average. So for example, the UK and France, who were tied for 22nd place both have a placing of 22.5, and then because there were 24 countries in the final, this number then got scaled to 24.38, which is what it would be like in a final of 26 countries.
I hope you enjoy the video! Please like, comment, and subscribe if you find my videos interesting, and I am always open to requests. I might do similar videos like this with the Nordics or the Balkans for example :)
