Ukrainian Patriotic Song - Oh, On the Mountain the Reapers are Reaping
Description translated from Ukrainian - Sorry for any grammatical errors!
"Oh, on the mountain and the reapers are reaping" is a Ukrainian folk song. It belongs to the Cossack historical songs.
The song probably originated in the second half of the XVII century. The oldest version is recorded in Galicia in the records of Domenik Rudnytsky in 1713 "Songs are different and some are translated into notes". Sreznevsky and Kamanin associated the song with Mikhail Doroshenko and Petro Konashevich-Sagaidachny during the Khotyn campaign. Maksymovych guessed the date of the song in the time of Petro Doroshenko, seeing in Sagaidachnoe one of the officers of the Zaporozhian hut. Yavornytsky, referring to Maksymovych, suggested that he was the Kosh Ataman, an ally of Hetman Petro Doroshenko, Hryhoriy Sagaidachny. The dating of the song in the second half of the 17th century was supported by V. Antonovych, M. Drahomanov, B. Hrinchenko.
In Drohozdenko, Borys Hrinchenko saw Colonel Vasyl Drozdenko of Bratslav; he defined the text from Domenyk Rudnytsky's collection as literary.
M. Yevstakhevych, suggested that "Drohozdenko" is Drozdenko, a centurion who "brought to Doroshenko Hetman of Transdniestrian Ukraine Bryukhovetsky in June 1668, after which Bryukhovetsky was killed", and Sagaidachny - "probably not Petro Konashevich Sagaidachny, and Gregory Sagaidachny, basket chieftain in 1686."
There is a Polish version of the song "Across Wide Ukraine", which instead of Sagaidachny mentions Kyiv voivode Stefan Khmeletsky, nicknamed the "Tatar scourge" for his victories over the Tatars.
Other names: "Oh, on the mountain let the reapers reap", "Oh on the mountain and the reapers reap", "Oh on the mountain the reapers reap", "Hey, on the mountain and the reapers reap ", "Hey, on the mountain the reapers reap".
Over time, the melody of the song was used by Yevhen Adamtsevych in writing "Zaporozhye March" and the orchestra of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in "Cossack March".
