The World's Only Wooden Double-Helix Temple...

The ethereal beauty of Sazaedo Temple’s double helix shape… 😲

Originally designed to keep worshippers from disturbing one another, Sazaedo’s unique design prevents visitors from passing in opposite directions. Built in 1796, it’s also the only wooden building designed in this style in the entire world.

The walls of the interior are plastered with labels, mostly bearing the names of visitors who have made the trip to the samurai heartland of Aizu to worship since the Edo Period. Originally the temple was full of 33 Buddhist statues known as ‘kannon’ which marked the designated prayer spots, and although they are no longer there, this remains the same building as it stood over two hundred years ago.
