Welcome to my video! In this video, we discuss 8 facts about the Catalan language. The Catalan language is a Romance language spoken in Catalonia, in the Valencian Community, some parts of Aragon, the Balearic Islands, some parts of Murcia, Andorra, in the french department of Pyrénées Orientales and in Alghero on the island of Sardinia. The closest language that is most similar to Catalan is Occitan. Catalan also has similarities to other Romance languages, such as Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese.

8 Catalan is spoken by 10 million people
7. Catalan is a Romance language derived from Vulgar Latin
6 Catalan has been banned and repressed several times during its long history until as recently as 1975
5 Catalan has six dialects, from East to West
4 La Renaixença, the cultural revival of Catalan

After the War of Spanish Succession (1701–1714) during which Catalonia lost its independence to King Philip V and the crown of Castille, Catalan culture underwent a period of decline, exacerbated by new laws insisting on the use of the Spanish language. However, the beginning of the 19th century saw the emergence of a wave of artists, authors and playwrights who wished to revive the Catalan language. This period, known as La Renaixença, saw the re-establishment of a Medieval tradition called Jocs Florals, or ‘floral games’, a competition in which Catalan poets would compete for recognition in various categories such as best love poem or best patriotic poem. Since then, the Catalan renaissance, Renaixença, has been gathering strength, with many notable works of literature published in the language.

3 Catalan is the only official language of Andorra

As much as Catalan may be the preferred language of choice among the local population of Catalonia, in Andorra it is the sole official language. In Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, Catalan is an official language alongside Spanish (Castellano), meaning that all official communication has to be available in both.
However, in the tiny country of Andorra, Catalan is recognised as the only official language.

2 Arabic has not had much of an influence on Catalan as it had on Spanish

While Spanish has adopted a number of features from Arabic due to the Moorish invasion and subsequent conquest of Spain in the 8th century, the Catalan language avoided such influences. For example, Spanish has a long list of loanwords from Arabic and has adopted the prefix al- in a number of words,as al is the definitive article in Arabic (much like the English the). Now to show the contrast, the Spanish word for ‘artichoke’ is alcachofa, while the Catalan equivalent is carxofa. The Spanish word for ‘cotton’ is algodón, and the Catalan equivalent is cotó.

1 Catalan is a proper language, not a dialect of Spanish

It has more in common with Gallo-Romance languages than Ibero-Romance languages, so basically it has more in common with French and Italian than Spanish and Portuguese.
Surprisingly enough, the Ibero-Romance languages (Spanish and Portuguese) are not as similar to Catalan as one Gallo-Romance language in particular: Occitan. Occitan is spoken in southern France and shares a lot with Catalan in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. In fact, sometimes the Catalan TV channels in Spain will air shows in Occitan, particularly if music is involved.
