You'll learn simple drawing and painting techniques that will help you to create this inspirational springtime landscape image with a happy male and female cardinal sitting in big white and pink magnolia style flowers on a bright spring day. This inspirational couple, with their soft feathers and sweet facial expressions are sharing a tender moment as they rest with their wings down and their crowns up, perhaps ready to eat lunch, have a conversation, or just gaze into each other's eyes. Surrounded by flowers of all different sizes, the light glows from the sun that is keeping the day nice and warm in this country field, which adds to the ambiance of the tranquil natural oasis. You'll learn how to create dimension in the shape of the bird's bodies and faces, and in the flower petals with a simple layering technique to create contour highlights and shadows that will define the small details. You'll also learn how to create a dramatic sky and a blurry out-of-focus bokeh background using color theory and blending to guide you through a soft gradient of colors. When painting the land and flower petals, you'll learn to use carefree impressionistic brushstrokes to create texture and dimension. MATERIALS:
Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 1/2 inch flat bristle (large), #8 round synthetic (medium), #2 round synthetic (small)
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, ultramarine blue, burnt umber (brown), deep yellow, fire red
Other: white chalk, palette, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint 1st layer of background with white, black and brown
2. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint 2nd layer of background with white, red, yellow, blue and brown
3. chalk - Draw outline of birds and flowers
4. #8 round brush - Paint basecoat of birds with red, yellow, brown and white
5. #8 round brush - Paint 1st layer of petals with light red (made in step 2) and white
6. #2 round brush - Paint beaks with black, brown, red, yellow and white
7. #2 round brush - Finish faces with black, brown, tan (made in step 4), light blue (made in step 2), white, yellow and red
8. #8 round brush - Paint dark areas on birds with brown, black, tan and red
9. #8 round and 1/2 inch bristle brushes - Finish feathers with tan, white, light yellow (made in step 2), red, white, light red and brown
10. #8 round brush - Finish flowers with white, light red, blue and red
11. #2 round brush - Sign with white
