Modern warfare is undergoing a radical shift toward total automation, and this recent footage of Russia’s field tests for the Courier unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) highlights that transition. The standout feature here isn’t just the mobile chassis, but the integration of the Bagulnik-82 automated mortar module.

This system effectively removes the human element from one of the most dangerous roles on the battlefield: the mortar crew. Traditional crews are notoriously vulnerable to drone surveillance and immediate counter-battery fire. By placing an 82mm mortar—likely derived from the lightweight 2B24—onto a remote-controlled tracked platform, the system can engage targets and reposition without ever putting personnel in the line of fire.

The most impressive technical feat shown is the fully automated reloading arm. You can see the mechanical arm retrieve and chamber a fresh 82mm round in approximately five seconds. This allows the system to maintain a sustained firing rate of 10 to 12 rounds per minute, which is on par with, or even faster than, a seasoned human crew under combat stress. In a high-intensity environment, this "shoot and scoot" capability, combined with a rotating, stabilized turret, means the Courier can provide 360-degree fire support while minimizing its own footprint.

However, the shift to robotic artillery introduces new complexities. While the Courier can operate at ranges between 100 and 6,000 meters, its effectiveness relies heavily on precise geolocation and resilient communication links. In an environment saturated with electronic warfare, maintaining the GPS and data links necessary for accurate indirect fire is a massive hurdle. Despite these challenges, the Bagulnik-82 represents a clear push toward "precise mass," where autonomous platforms are used to saturate the battlefield with firepower while preserving human life.
