WATCH: Wreckage of Baltimore's Key Bridge demolished

Crews demolished the longest remaining span of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Monday, using a series of controlled explosions to free the container ship that crashed into the bridge in March.

Weather delays initially postponed the demolition of the 500-foot-long stretch of bridge, which has been sitting atop the Dali since it lost power and veered off course into one of the bridge's support columns. Coast Guard officials said the Dali's 21 crew members, who have not been allowed to leave the ship since the bridge collapse, would shelter in place aboard the ship during the demolition.

Six construction workers, all immigrants, were killed when the bridge the collapsed. Two others were pulled alive from the water following the accident. The team had been working overnight shift filling potholes; police were unable to warn them about the out-of-control ship in time.
Victims included Mexican nationals Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, and Carlos Hernandez, 24; Guatemalan national Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26; Salvadoran national Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, 49, and Honduran national Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 38.

It took rescue crews weeks more to recover the body of Jose Mynor Lopez, 37, of Guatemala, whose remains were pulled from the water on May 7.

The FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board, among others, have launched investigations into the crash. The City of Baltimore filed a lawsuit against the owner and manager of the Dali, claiming negligence. A class action lawsuit filed late last month by a small business in Maryland seeks damages for lost revenue, something that could apply to other businesses in the region should it move forward.
