What to Do in Arima Onsen, near Kobe, Japan [PRIVATE ONSEN]

Here are some of the best things to do in Arima Onsen, in Kobe, Japan. I visited in January 2020, and loved looking round Arima Onsen's souvenir shops, and walking the winding and hilly streets. I even tried my own private onsen while I was there, and an epic lunch too.

Arima Onsen, where the hot water springs flow freely. Around an hour from both Kobe and Osaka, it’s a popular spot for people to come and bathe in the hot springs, and to visit the long-established souvenir shops.

Arima Onsen is known as the oldest onsen town in Japan, with a history dating back over 1300 years. The natural mountain setting, easy to reach, makes it a unique place.

There are several hot spring sources in Arima where the water wells up from underground. These waters are said to cure a whole range of ailments. This shrine to the hot springs gives thanks for providing such an amazing source for the local people.

“This is the source for Kin No Yu Golden Hot Spring and it has curing properties for your throat, so now Vicky-San is inhaling the hot spring vapour.”

The hilly main street known as Yumotozaka is lined on both sides with souvenir shops and other fascinating stores. Don’t be shy, pop in, explore and enjoy a sample!

Indulge in a kaiseki meal in Arima Onsen, specially made with local produce, and unique steaming techniques – and always so beautifully presented.
