These are the best headphones for mixing audio in 2021, welcome to Headphones Lab.

Number 3

Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro
Most open-back headphones are generally targeted towards audiophiles, and the DT 990 Pro is no exception. In fact, this particular pair is known as one of the best, if not the best mid-range open-back audiophile headphones you can get! Perfect for producing music, editing audio to video, mixing either of them, and, basically, they’re good for precision audio work that’s what reference monitor means.

Based on the most popular studio headphones of all time - the DT 770 Pro - which you’ll find in every music studio and radio station, the DT 990 achieves a near identical frequency response for very clear and very accurate sound. Keep in mind that frequency response is entirely personal preference, but having a flat response means that, on average, this will sound good to more people than pretty much any other headphones.

However, the downside with an open design is that you absolutely can’t use these on the road. Not only they won’t be able to block any noises at all, but others around you will also be able to hear whatever you’re listening to very loudly and clearly. At least they’ll keep your ears cooler than a closed-back option!

Number 2

AudioTechnica ATH-M50X, or the closely related M30X and M50XBT
If you want the highest audio quality, go with the classic and critically acclaimed M50X, if you need portability because you travel a lot or move around the studio and already have plenty enough wires it’s the M50XBT, and if you’re just starting out in content creation, go with the M30X for affordability.

What all 3 have in common is a near identical sound signature, a 45mm driver, 15Hz - 28KHz frequency response, and 38 Ohm impedance - slightly downgraded to 40mm, 15 - 22Khz, and 47 Ohms in the M30X. But that’s on just on paper, I promise there’s more to it than the frequency range - because the accuracy with which it handles that range is really what determines how much you’ll enjoy the sound.

They all feature a closed back design, ideal for critical monitoring without leaking sound into your microphone, circumaural ear cups with great sound isolation, a portable, lightweight and foldable design, and the wireless BT model even features a built-in microphone for hands-free calls, 40 hours continuous use on a full charge, in addition to, of course Bluetooth 5.0

Number 1

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro
The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro have featured many times on this channel already, and maybe I am a little biased - they’re my personal favourite. It’s not just me though - these are the headphones you’ll see in pretty much any filmed radio interview you’ve ever seen. Walk into any music studio and, I bet you money, these are on the mixing desk.

They’ve become a music industry favourite thanks to the legendarily flat and accurate frequency response - meaning that music is clear and unaltered by the mechanics of the headphone, reproduced exactly as the musician intended. Are they the flattest headphones ever? YES- no I’m kidding, they’re not, but you’d have to pay a lot more to get it flatter than this. Plus, the closed back design allows you to focus only on the music, and nothing around you.

They also offer a frequency response of 5Hz - 35KHz, which goes beyond the boundaries of human hearing. Perfect human hearing has a range of 20Hz - 20KHz, which is very deep bass to very high treble frequencies. Is there any point in headphones going beyond what we can hear? Yes, but that’s an audio engineering lesson for another time - simply put, you can’t hear it, but you can still feel it.

They’re also sturdy and reliable enough for daily professional use year on end, and that applies to the thick cable, which is coiled for the 250 ohm version. They’re definitely comfortable enough for that amount of use too, as one of the comfiest headphones we’ve ever had in the office.
