STRING ART | Timelapse | Tutorial | Animal, Deer

Timelapse of the whole creation process of a deer shape string art.
I quickly fell in love with this DIY art project, and have been making a few for the past years. I now feel I have a few tips to share on how to create your own master piece, without going through the hassle I went through discovering this on my own.

In this muted tutorial, you will find:
1. Tools needed
2. Painting. (10 minutes) If you are spray painting, go in short spans to avoid having droplets. You can repeat this process once it has dried. And please, wear a mask!
3. Varnishing. (10 minutes) Do not put too much on. Apply varnish both ways (vertical and horizontal), but the last brush must be one or the other, to homogeneity. Be careful to brush the sides quite often, as you will otherwise have dry grey drips.
4. Take one nail, and make a small hole at each place you will need a nail. You can do this above your template. For my first project, and nailed every nail above the template. I then ripped the template off. Every nail had a tiny (yet visible) piece of paper under it. I had to pull out over 200 nails and start again... FYI 😉 (15 minutes)
2 small hammer hits are sufficient.
5. Once you have marked where every nail should be, take off the template, and smash in all the nails. Flat-headed nails are better, as they retain the string from popping up. If this happens, it is super duper hard to put back, so you want to avoid it at all cost. If you 22mm x 2mm nails. I would say I push them in around 5mm, and they hold strong.
If you are right-hand, I suggest nailing from right to left. This will allow space for you hand. Remember, you can spin you art piece any way. For the deer, I would suggest have the ears facing right, and going from right to left. (20 minutes)
6. String process. I suggest first to demarcate the various parts or color change. Start by tying a double knot to an off-center nail.
7. Zig zag from one nail to its opposite, then down. Repeat the process 4 times. In this precise project, one nail holds a lot of string. Make sure it is firmly inserted in your wooden piece. Sometimes, the string will pop up from the previous nail because you are holding your string too high. If this happens, it may pop up of 4-8 nails if half a second. To avoid this, you can put your left index finger on the previous stringed nail to retain the string from jumping off and starting a domino effect. (30 minutes)
8. Burn any remaining string ends from knots. Careful to quickly tap the flame with your finger, you do not want it spreading to quickly and burning any adjacent string; The whole section would have to be started again.
9. Offer your new creation to a loved one :)

Thanks for viewing, and please share your thoughts. Would you like to see more? What are you thinking of trying?
