How college *almost* ruined my life

Early 2016, I'd just achieved eagle scout and black belt, and was an active game developer. RPGamesEngine was making steady progress and was nearing release. My grades were in the upper 90s and I was top in the programming department of my school, second place in the whole building. I grinded daily uploads on a growing YouTube channel, survival island was going strong.

Mid to late 2018: I was $20,000 in debt, alienated all of my friends, lost my girlfriend, was stuck doing work that I hated for 18 hours a day, didn't have the motivation to do anything other than homework, and my body would give up on me and I would sit there and watch the due date pass without finishing the assignment. What happened?
