Love of the Old Fashioned Garden Roses
The old roses from times past have a special, soft and sweet beauty and usually a wonderful, strong and sweet perfume. Their delicate colours change a little depending on the weather and
temperature. Many are summer flowering but there are some that are repeat flowering during the autumn.
This video is meant to be a little tribute to the roses that I love. There are also some images of beautiful and romantic interiors that were decorated with roses as a theme.
The music is Schubert Serenade and Haydn String Quartet Op.1, No.3
Antique, old, heritage, historic, vintage, ancient, heirloom or cabbage roses..much loved roses have many names. Here is a presentation of some of the sorts.
Rosa Gallica: It is one of the earliest cultivated species of roses, cultivated by the Greek and Romans and used in mediaeval gardens. In the 19th century it was the most important species of rose to be cultivated.
Examples: Rosa Mundi, Tuscany Superb, Cardinal de Richelieu, Hippolyte, Belle de Crecy, Duchesse de Montebello, Complicata, Comtesse de Lacepede, Empress Josephine
Damask rose, Rosa Damascena: The flowers are renowned for their fine fragrance, and are harvested for rose oil used in perfumery and to make rose water. The flower petals are used to flavor food and to make tea. The Crusader Robert de Brie is said to have brought the Damask rose from Syria to Europe between 1254 and 1276. Other stories say the Romans brought the rose to England, or that the physician of Henry VIII gave him a Damask rose as a present, around 1540.
