Russia's Behavior Just Forced NATO's Hand on Defense #threat #NATO

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte presented the 2025 Annual Report, calling it "eventful" and pivotal for global security. Rutte detailed NATO's adaptation to a dangerous world, highlighting the ongoing impact of Russia's war in Ukraine and support for Russia from China, Iran, North Korea, and Belarus. He warned of Russia's reckless behavior, including airspace violations and hybrid threats, and noted China's military expansion and terrorism threats. The report stressed NATO's need to strengthen collective defence, leading to a "bolder approach." At the NATO Summit in The Hague, Allies agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. For the first time since 2014, all members met the 2% defense spending target, with many exceeding it, leading to a 20% increase in spending by European Allies and Canada. Rutte emphasized a shift in mindset, with Allies taking more responsibility for their own defence, reducing reliance on the U.S. The report identifies Russia as the main threat to Euro-Atlantic security, detailing cyberattacks, sabotage, and interference. NATO launched "Baltic Sentry" to protect undersea infrastructure and "Eastern Sentry" to reinforce the eastern flank after Russian drone incursions. Both missions use advanced drone technology to enhance readiness across all domains. Support for Ukraine remained a priority, with Allies providing military, humanitarian, and non-lethal aid. In February 2025, a joint training center was established in Poland. Later, NATO launched an initiative to supply Ukraine with U.S. military equipment funded by Allies. NATO also worked with partners on long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Rutte concluded that 2025 marked a "new chapter," with NATO now stronger, more united, and better prepared. The report's decisions will shape NATO's future. *Subscribe to Europe Pulse* for the latest European news.
