Tom Waits's "Hoist That Rag": Marc Ribot Guitar Solo Explained

This solo is a fascinating meditation on chord structures and syncopation in the 5th position. Unlike typical improv, this thing is much more about patterns and repetition, as opposed to melodic evolution. Not to say that it's purely rhythm - it's got a serpentine form that is most definitely memorable as well!
