MOUNTAIN LION in WNC? - A Study
This is a study - in a video-essay format. If you want instant wildlife-footage you can either skip to the 3:27 mark, or you can just go on to the next video. :-)
-- Was it a Catamount?--
A large cat walked by my trail camera the other night in Western North Carolina. I decided to compare that cat video to some other wildlife footage I've captured with the same trail camera. I was impressed with the results.

Remember when I said I'd probably never top my Hammock Bears videos?
Well, I probably won't ever top those Hammock Bear videos, at least not in terms of public appeal. But THIS critter-cam footage has me, personally, the most excited of all. As many of you know, I have been searching for the Big Cat in WNC for years now, and after doing my homework, I feel comfortable saying that that is exactly what crossed in front of my trail camera one night. (What kind of big cat, I have no idea. But suffice it to say, it IS a cat. It is NOT a bobcat. And it is big. I’ll just leave it at that.)
I doubt I'll ever see this cat again. Never saw it before that night, either - and I have had trail cameras running 24/7 for over 7 years now. Plus, there’s the crazy fact that I’m up to 24 trail cameras at this point. Why, Yes! You probably can call me obsessed.
Frankly, it would be just as well if we never saw this cat again. May that big cat just keep on keeping on. I'm glad it happened across our path, though, at least this one time, on its great big walk-about.
P.S. This video was technically taken in the early morning, before dawn – not at ‘night.’ I didn’t feel like editing my video to say what the exact time was. I left the info-bar for the trail camera ‘on’ so folks can figure out the actual timing of the video for themselves.
