Toy Photography Behind the Scenes: 327th Star Corps

327th Star Corps, toy photography.

Hello and welcome back to another behind the scenes toy photography video. Today I'm going to show you how I made the setup for this photo which I've entitled 327th Star Corps.

I'll also show you how I edited the image in Photoshop.

As usual I'm shooting Star Wars The Black Series by Hasbro. We've got Jedi Master Ayla Secura and Clone Commander Bly, as well as 9 B1 Battle Droids.

This was one of my more minimalist setups. There was no real scenery, just lighting and figures. I placed our protagonists front and centre and filled in the background as best I could with battle droids. I used these acrylic figure stands to help make it look like they were being blown up.

My plan was to take 2 exposures. One with the centre blue light on and one with it off. I would later combine these in Photoshop to help sell the lightsaber effect.

Once all my droids were in place, I used some small sparklers to really sell the explosion. I unfortunately forgot to film this part and only realized after I'd torn everything down, so sorry about that!

Here's my base image. I'd start my edit by masking in the other exposure. My goal was to have the lightsaber glow show up on our protagonists but not on the figures in the background.

Next I added adjustment layers to alter the light levels, colour balance, hue and saturation.

After that I used a combination of tools to draw in the lightsaber blade.

And then I removed the the articulation joints on the figures.

And lastly I added some muzzle flare to Bly's rifle.

And here we have the final image!
