How B.B. King Made a Few Notes Sound Like a Thousand

A short demonstration in the key of G inspired by B.B. King's early 1950s guitar style.

Performed acoustically on my Gretsch Gin Rickey and filmed from a close, foreshortened angle so both hands can be seen working together throughout the performance.

Using a thumb-and-fingers approach for a more expressive attack, greater dynamic control, and the ability to move seamlessly between rhythm and lead ideas.

Rather than relying on speed or large numbers of notes, this approach focuses on extracting as much emotion and expression as possible from a handful of carefully chosen notes.

One of B.B.'s great strengths was his ability to play slower, vocal-like phrases over an already busy and fast-moving boogie rhythm.

Rather than competing with the groove, he would float above it.

This approach owes much to the influence of T-Bone Walker, whose 1940s recordings demonstrated how a few well-placed notes could often say more than an entire flurry of notes.

Using:

• thumb-and-fingers technique
• string bends
• microtonal movement
• vibrato
• dynamics and touch
• vocal-like phrasing
• strategically placed chord punches
• tension and release
• slower melodic statements over active rhythm guitar

The goal is to make the guitar sing.

Sometimes the most powerful phrase isn't the one with the most notes —
it's the one that says the most with the fewest.

Built from feel, timing, and the emotional depth of each note.

Everything tied to the groove.
