Henry VIII's BRUTAL Castles - The Device Forts

During the reign of Henry VIII, the notorious King of England built a network of castles and forts along the English coast to defend his realm against impending invasion. Henry had annoyed a huge amount of Europe with his break from the Catholic Church as he was not allowed a divorce by the Pope. It seemed likely that an attack or invasion to England would occur from France or Spain. Henry VIII inspected the existing defences that would have been called into service to protect England, and he deemed them not to be good enough.

Because of this, he issued the creation of around 30 different fortifications and castles to be made along the coast of England. These were known as the Device Forts and would have been used to defend England from attack by using artillery and cannons. The Device Forts were made incredibly quickly which shows how desperate the situation was for England and the King, and many of these were garrisoned within a year in which the order was issued.

Throughout the centuries many of these castles saw action and today many still stand and are able to be visited. However they would have served a huge purpose for the King in order for him to defend his nation. Soldiers would be based here all the time to stand by their cannons to fire on anything perceived to be an enemy. Life at the Devices was difficult and at times tedious and boring, but they were even used during the Second World War. So around 400 years after they were created, they were still used to protect England even during World War 2.
