In 1983, a United States Army intelligence officer wrote a twenty-nine page report. He was asked to assess a training programme that claimed, quite seriously, to alter human consciousness. To lift the mind from the body. To observe distant places without moving.

He did not dismiss it. He wrote a physics paper.

The report was classified, then quietly released to the public in 2003. It has lived ever since in the Central Intelligence Agency's reading room.

Tonight, we read the first part.
