What is GSM? How does it define paper?

GSM is short for Grams per Square Meter (g/m2). It is a simply a specification for how much a square meter of paper weighs in grams. It has nothing to do with thickness nor does it define any specific quality of the paper. It is simply a measure of weight. For instance resin coated papers that are 310 gsm are markedly thinner than 100% cotton papers that are the same gsm.
