Extinct for 10,000 Years. Now the Dire Wolves Are Back.

Scientists Have Brought Back Dire Wolves—Seriously.

After being extinct for over 10,000 years, dire wolves—massive predators that once roamed alongside mammoths—are alive again.

Using DNA from ancient fossils, researchers at Colossal Biosciences cracked the dire wolf’s genetic code. They then modified modern gray wolf DNA to match it and implanted the embryo into a regular dog.

The result? Two living dire wolves named Romulus and Remus. They're now six months old, over four feet long, and not like any dog you've seen. They're alive, healthy—and totally wild. They avoid humans, stay silent, and act more like ancient hunters than pets.

Some people see this as a scientific miracle. Others are warning: just because we can bring back extinct animals… should we?
