To be a parent is a very important, attention-consuming role, and thus it is natural to become identified with it. However, Eckhart states, this role is one that we must let go of as our children grow into adulthood. Even though we may have more life experience and wisdom than them, an inability to let grown children make their own mistakes indicates that one is still clinging to the role of parent on an egoic level.
