Can mental illnesses be the defense for taking lives of the innocents?

In the 9th episode of unmasking the murderer, Dr. Johnston talks about medical child abuse. This is commonly known as Munchausen by proxy, where the caretaker makes a child ill, exaggerates a true illness, or lies about an illness in order to receive attention from the role of self-sacrificing parent.

This story is about Martha Woods, who murdered 7 children and, in 1972, was charged with the first-degree murder of her adopted baby Paul.

Martha was sentenced to 75 years of life imprisonment. This case also set the rule to allow testimony about patterns of previous behavior into the courtroom.
