It was the opening match of the 2002 World Cup, and Senegal were playing their first-ever game at a World Cup. On the other side: France — reigning champions, ranked number one in the world. Senegal were 42nd. It was supposed to be a massacre.

Instead, in the 30th minute, Papa Bouba Diop scored — and Senegal won 1-0. It only got worse for France: the champions went the ENTIRE tournament without scoring a single goal and crashed out in the group stage, while Senegal marched all the way to the quarter-finals.

Sadly, Papa Bouba Diop passed away in 2020 at just 42. When Senegal walk out against France again, they'll be playing for his memory too. 🕊️
