Cold Steel Espada XL Review

The Cold Steel Espada XL G10 - a name almost as long as the knife itself. Calling this a "knife" is a gross understatement, really. The words "short sword" are more what come to mind. Or, for me in particular, "the quicker finger chopper-offer" seems more appropriate. This thing is pretty much the ultimate in folding cutlery, offering the biggest darned blade you can possibly carry within a pocket. Anything longer, and you'd be having to strap this bad boy onto your hip or across your back in a scabbard.

Without a doubt, the absolute pure rationale behind this knife's design is fighting, plain and simple. You have an absurd amount of blade and handle length that adds a VERY significant amount of reach and a fairly obscene amount of penetrating potential - enough that you could quite literally impale an attacker (or zombie?). The blade itself, made of AUS-8A steel and literally hair-shaving sharp (as most Cold Steel knives go), is shaped in such a way that it excels in thrusting, slashing, hacking, cutting ... just about anything you could do with a short sword. Heck, there's even enough grip length that you can easily wield it with both hands.

So, who would buy this monster, let alone carry it? Well, assuming the blade length isn't a problem with your state/local laws, this would be an ideal alternative or perhaps even a backup to a concealed firearm. There are places and occasions when you can legally carry a knife but you can't carry a firearm. Just as well, it's quite an impressive piece both in its formidable appearance and its intimidating deployment - draw it from within that pocket, a loud CLACK! sounds, and suddenly there's a freakin' Bowie knife on steroids in your hand. Whether or not it would scare away an attacker is debatable, but there's no denying it's an impressive piece to show off to your buddies at a backyard BBQ. Also, even though the G10 model isn't quite as beautiful as its more expensive counterpart (the one with Micarta scales and polished aluminum), it still makes for quite a nice wall-hanger.

As far as EDC goes? Ummm ... NO. Not that it's heavy or uncomfortable to carry at all - far from it, as it's amazingly light and thin for its size - but the blade is simply too gargantuan to use for everyday cutting tasks. If you're going to carry this knife every day, you'd be wise to also carry a smaller knife as well, as this again the next best thing to carrying a firearm and, like a gun, this isn't something you should really plan on using every single day.

For what it is, I love the Espada XL - ridiculously big, built absurdly strong, and utterly badass to hold and behold. Honestly, I've only carried this a few times since I purchased it - yes, I'm still a little afraid of it after nearly severing my thumb with it - and most of the time it sits in a display stand on my fireplace mantle, but I still have a strange adoration for this monster.
